4 years on, KU’s distance mode students await completion of PG

Bhat Imran

Srinagar, June 08 (KNO): Despite elapsing four years, the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) wing of University of Kashmir (KU) has failed to complete the various Postgraduate (PG) courses of 2015 batch.

The DDE students told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that since 2019, the varsity has not conducted any examinations of their batch.

One of the students said, “Our degree was supposed to be completed in 2017. However, due to lackadaisical approach of KU, we are stuck in 3rd and 4th semesters.”

It has been learnt that 95 per cent DDE PG students of 2015 batch couldn’t qualify most of the subjects in 3rd and 4th semester in 2018 due to the ill-timed schedule of the examinations.

“In 2018, class work and internal assessments of 3rd and 4th semesters were going on and the KU authorities informed us that they will conduct an untimely external exam of both semesters in May in which more than 95 per cent students failed in majority of the subjects,” the students said.

They said that the exams of both the semesters were scheduled to be held in August-2018.

“We have submitted our backlog examination forms of 3rd and 4th semesters in January 2019 but unfortunately due to uncertainty and the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, our exams were not held at the appropriate time,” they said, adding that they have already suffered academic losses in 2016 and 2019.

They said they are apprehensive of losing one more academic year. “We appeal KU authorities to promote us on basis of internal assessment of previous semesters as per the guidelines of University Grants Commission (UGC) so that our unending PG will get completed now.”

KU’s DDE Director, Tariq Ahmad Chishti told KNO there was no provision for distance mode backlog students to promote on internal assessments.

“Promotion of students on basis of internal assessment of previous years is for regular batch and the PG students of 2015 batch cannot be considered as regular students,” Chishti said.

He said if the students of the respective batch fail or have a backlog in any subject, they will have to appear in the examination.  “If the situation improves, we are planning to conduct their offline exams in the next three week. If the situation doesn’t improve, we will conduct their online exams,” Chishti said— (KNO)
